Homemade Apple Sauce on a Rainy Day

We made apple sauce in a crockpot today! It was a  super simple recipe (apples, water, cinnamon) yet a very purposeful activity.

First we needed to peel, cut, and core about 10-12 apples. Thanks to this handy-dandy tool, it was a whole lot of fun! The children washed and applied an apple, turned the crank, and watched in amazement as the skin peeled off and the apple separated from the core.

We were pleased to see the apple cut into a spiral, or  a "slinky" as one student called it.

And we were impressed by the length of the skin.

Some even enjoyed eating the skin.

The apple spirals we prepared went into the crockpot with about 1 cup of water.

Now time to add the cinnamon!

1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon was a good amount.

The apples cooked in the crockpot throughout the work cycle (about 2 hours). We turned off the heat at lunch to let it cool in time for our afternoon snack

Many students enjoyed this homemade apple snack
I think we will make it again sometime!
